Pobjoy Mint struck this piece for the Isle of Man to commemorate the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid — the same Games overshadowed by the U.S. boycott debate and the unexpected Soviet hockey defeat that became known as the Miracle on Ice. Pobjoy had secured a productive relationship with the Isle of Man Treasury through the 1970s, producing a stream of commemorative crown-sized issues that made the island one of the more prolific small-territory minting programs of the era.
The KM#64a designation distinguishes the silver striking from the cupro-nickel base issue (KM#64), both released simultaneously for collector and circulation markets respectively.
