Richard I spent fewer than six months of his ten-year reign in England, viewing the kingdom primarily as a source of revenue to fund the Third Crusade. He famously remarked that he would have sold London itself if he could find a buyer. Gibraltar's late-1990s commemorative crown series mined English medieval history extensively, and this 1999 issue falls within a prolific run of proof silver strikes produced for the collector market rather than circulation — the Gibraltar Government having long used such programs as a reliable revenue stream.
