Additional information

The Isle of Man Treasury issued a sustained run of wildlife-themed crowns throughout the 1990s, largely targeting the collector market rather than circulation. Most saw negligible use as actual currency. The killer whale issue appeared the same year as the release of Free Willy 2, and while the IoM Treasury has never formally acknowledged a tie-in, the timing was not accidental — the orca had become unusually prominent in popular culture following the original 1993 film.

KM#585 is one of several crown types from this year; the series was prolific enough that individual issues rarely command premiums in copper-nickel.
