| Additional information |
Issued ahead of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Gibraltar produced a raft of commemorative crowns covering individual athletic events — this javelin piece being one of dozens in that run. Gibraltar's right to issue its own coinage, distinct from UK currency, dates to a 1988 Gibraltar Coinage Act, which opened the door to exactly this kind of high-volume commemorative program targeting collector markets rather than circulation.
