The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, and by 2000 the territory had established itself as one of the most aggressive producers of themed coinage in the British Isles. This piece marks the assembly of the International Space Station, which began in earnest with the docking of the Zarya module in November 1998 — a joint American-Russian venture that required post-Cold War cooperation to get off the ground, literally and politically.
Pobjoy Mint, the Isle of Man's primary striking partner for this period, produced these in large numbers for the collector market rather than circulation.
