Issued to mark the centenary of the First World War, this Gibraltar crown appeared in a wave of commemorative releases from British territories in 2014 — the same year the UK government launched its four-year programme of WWI remembrance. Gibraltar's participation reflects its status as a Crown Dependency issuing authority rather than any particular operational connection to the Western Front.
"In Flanders Fields" was written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in May 1915, reportedly composed in twenty minutes after presiding over the burial of a friend at Ypres.
