The Isle of Man's treasury aggressively pursued commemorative coinage as a revenue stream throughout the 1980s, issuing crown-sized pieces in multiple metals simultaneously for the same subject — the gold variant of this ice dancing issue would have been struck in extremely limited numbers relative to its cupro-nickel counterpart, targeting collector rather than circulation markets. The 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo provided the immediate occasion, with ice dancing that year won by Torvill and Dean, British skaters whose "Bolero" routine had dominated international competition for the preceding season.
