Issued to mark the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, fought on 21 October 1805 roughly 30 miles off Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Nelson was struck by a French sharpshooter's ball from the mizzen top of the Redoutable at approximately 1:15 pm and died three hours later, by which point the battle was effectively won. Gibraltar held particular relevance to the commemoration — the fleet had provisioned there before the engagement, and Nelson's body was returned to the Rock preserved in a cask of spirits before being transported to England.
