Ascension Island's administrative link to the moon landing is more direct than most commemorative issuers can claim: the island's BBC relay station and NASA tracking facilities played an active role in the Apollo 11 mission, receiving telemetry and supporting communications during the July 1969 flight. The tracking station, operated in conjunction with the Minitrack network, made the island a genuine node in the mission's infrastructure rather than an incidental geography on a commemorative coin.
