The Isle of Man has issued commemorative crowns under licence from the British Crown since the 1970s, and its Apollo-themed pieces are among the more persistent in that catalogue — the 40th anniversary of the 1969 lunar landing prompted several mints and issuing authorities worldwide to release commemoratives in 2009. The Pobjoy Mint, which has struck the majority of Manx commemorative coinage, produced this piece for that cycle.
KM#1415 is one of several variants issued simultaneously in this series, with precious metal editions struck alongside the copper-nickel circulation-quality version.
