Additional information

Issued to mark the bicentenary of Trafalgar, this crown is one of several Gibraltar pieces released in 2005 commemorating the battle — the territory's proximity to Cape Trafalgar giving local authorities a reasonable claim to the subject. The "England Expects" signal, famously transmitted by flag hoist from HMS Victory on 21 October 1805, originally read "England confides that every man will do his duty" before signal lieutenant John Pasco persuaded Nelson to substitute "expects" for "confides," as the latter word required spelling out letter by letter under the Popham code.
