Gibraltar issued a wave of colored commemoratives in the early 2000s, exploiting its status as a British Overseas Territory to produce collector-market pieces largely disconnected from any circulating need. The 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings gave the mint a commercially viable hook. The colored poppy element is an enamel or pad-printing application added post-strike — a technique that disqualifies these pieces from most serious type collections while keeping them attractive to thematic collectors.
