The 1984 Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference was held on the Isle of Man, making this crown an unusually local commemoration — the island marking an international political gathering on its own soil. Tynwald, the Manx parliament, is widely cited as the world's oldest continuous parliament, with origins in the Norse Thing assemblies of the 10th century.
