| Reverse description | Central large facing bust of Charles Darwin, the naturalist, rendered in high relief with characteristic full beard and aged features, occupying most of the field. To the right, a standing early hominid figure evokes mankind's prehistoric origins, while behind it a space shuttle on its launch pad symbolises the pinnacle of human technological achievement, together illustrating the sweep of human evolution. The legend EVOLUTION OF MANKIND curves along the upper arc within a plain border. Below the portrait, a horizontal cartouche bears the inscription CHARLES DARWIN 1809-1882, with the denomination 1 CROWN appearing in the lower exergue. |

| Additional information |
Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns prolifically since the 1970s, many with only nominal connection to the territory itself. Darwin's inclusion here is thematic rather than geographical — he never visited Gibraltar, though HMS Beagle did pass through the Strait in 1832 during the same voyage that would eventually reshape natural history.
