Reverse description The central field depicts a detailed rendering of Zhang Heng's seismoscope (houfeng didong yi), the world's first seismograph invented in AD 132, shown as an ornate vessel with decorative dragon motifs and flanking foliage elements. A circular inset cameo portrait of the Han Dynasty polymath Zhang Heng, shown in right-facing profile with beard, is positioned at the lower right of the instrument. The inventor's name appears in both Latin script and Chinese characters (張衡) within the central design. The curved legend INVENTIONS OF THE MODERN WORLD arcs around the upper periphery, with FIRST SEISMOGRAPH AD 132 inscribed above the central motif, and the denomination 1 CROWN displayed in the lower field.
