Issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, this coin appeared during a period of sharp public debate — particularly in the United States, where the Smithsonian's planned Enola Gay exhibition was gutted that same year after veterans' groups and Congress objected to what they called an insufficiently celebratory framing of the mission. The Isle of Man, operating entirely outside that political pressure, had no such constraints.
The Pobjoy Mint produced numerous commemorative crowns for the Isle of Man throughout the 1990s covering subjects with no geographic connection to the island whatsoever.
