Additional information

The 1988 Australian Bicentenary generated a wave of commemorative coinage from issuers with no geographic connection to the event — the Isle of Man among them. The Treasury had been aggressively licensing commemorative themes throughout the 1980s under the Pobjoy Mint contract, producing crowns tied to events ranging from the World Cup to royal weddings. This piece falls squarely in that commercial program.

Copper-nickel strikes were produced alongside silver and gold versions, with the base metal issue absorbing the bulk of the mintage for collector packet sales.
