Additional information

The Isle of Man has long exploited its Crown dependency status to issue collector coins outside the constraints of UK monetary policy, and 1987 saw a flood of commemorative platinum strikes targeting the American collector market around the Constitution's bicentennial. These were not produced for circulation — the Isle of Man's Treasury contracted with Pobjoy Mint, which handled much of the island's commemorative output during this period, to produce limited platinum versions alongside gold and silver counterparts in the same series.

Platinum at .995 fineness was an unusual specification; most platinum bullion issues of the era used .9995. Whether intentional or a production decision, it distinguishes this piece from contemporaneous issues.
