Additional information

Gibraltar has issued commemorative crowns under royal license since the 1970s, producing themed series at a pace that far outstrips any genuine connection to the subject matter. The Battle of Stalingrad — fought between August 1942 and February 1943 — was a Soviet-German engagement in which Gibraltar played no historical role whatsoever. These issues exist because the territory's government holds the right to produce legal tender coinage and has consistently used that right to sell collector pieces on subjects with broad international appeal.

Mintage figures for Gibraltar crown issues of this period were rarely restricted, and secondary market values reflect that. KM#1150 circulated in the catalog trade rather than in pockets.
