Reverse description A boldly modelled right-facing truncated bust of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson dominates the right portion of the field, overlapping a detailed rendering of a full-rigged Royal Navy ship of the line under sail in the left and lower portions of the design. A ribbon banner in the upper left carries the inscription NELSON, while a second banner above reads 1758·1805 denoting his birth and death years. The denomination ONE CROWN appears in two lines to the lower right of the field. The composition, engraved by Philip Nathan, conveys a strong sense of naval grandeur and heroic portraiture.

Additional information

Gibraltar's 1980 Nelson crown commemorates the 175th anniversary of Trafalgar, fought just off the Rock's approaches in October 1805. Nelson died aboard HMS Victory during the battle and his body was returned to Gibraltar briefly before the ship made for England, making the island's claim to the commemoration something more than ceremonial.

KM#12a is the silver proof version of a base-metal issue struck the same year.
