| Obverse description | Second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II after Arnold Machin, depicting a crowned and draped bust facing right, wearing a pearl necklace and drop earring. The Queen is shown with elaborately styled hair beneath a tiara-style crown, with robes and regalia detailed at the truncation. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left field, NIGHTINGALE ISLAND along the right, and the date 2006 appears in the exergue. A fine toothed border runs along the entire circumference of the coin. |

| Additional information |
Nightingale Island is one of the most remote inhabited territories on earth — part of the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the South Atlantic, roughly 2,400 kilometres from the nearest landmass. The island itself has no permanent population, making it an issuing authority in name only, a legal fiction maintained to produce commemorative coins for the collector market. This piece marks Elizabeth II's 80th birthday in 2006, the same year the Royal Mint issued its own commemorative crown for the occasion.
