Tristan da Cunha's commemorative program has long leaned on its geographic isolation as a selling point, but the VE Day issues of 2005 — marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe — carried genuine weight for the island. During World War II, the British Royal Navy established a weather and radio station on Tristan, bringing the first significant outside presence to a population that had lived in near-total self-sufficiency since the early 19th century. The islanders themselves contributed to the war effort through that station.
