Additional information

Gibraltar's commemorative program has long issued crowns marking British royal events with no direct territorial connection, a practice rooted in the island's dependent status and its mint's commercial relationship with the Pobjoy Mint. This piece marks the 1838 coronation of Victoria — delayed nearly a year after her accession in June 1837 — an event so elaborately staged that the aging Lord Rolle famously tumbled down the coronation steps, prompting the eighteen-year-old queen to descend from her throne to assist him.
