Ascension Island has no meaningful connection to Dickens — its use here is purely jurisdictional convenience, allowing the issue to carry British Crown territory status without going through the Royal Mint's tighter commemorative approval process. The 150th anniversary falls in 2020, marking the sesquicentennial of Dickens's death in June 1870 at Gad's Hill Place, Kent, where he collapsed mid-sentence while writing The Mystery of Edwin Drood — a novel he never finished.
