Additional information

Nicaragua's National Theater — the Teatro Nacional Rubén Darío — was completed in 1969 with substantial funding from the Somoza government, a calculated piece of cultural patronage in a country where the dictatorship was already drawing international criticism. The 1994 silver issue commemorating it appeared just three years after the Sandinistas lost power in the 1990 elections, placing a building closely associated with the old regime on a coin minted under the new UNO coalition government — an awkward lineage few catalog entries bother to note.
