Additional information

The 1972 Managua earthquake struck on December 23rd of that year, killing an estimated 10,000 people and destroying roughly 90% of the city's buildings. Currency production and distribution were severely disrupted in the aftermath, and coins dated 1972 — struck before the disaster — circulated well into the reconstruction period simply because restocking the monetary system was a low priority against the scale of rebuilding required.
