Obverse description A lion passant to the left occupies the central field, rendered in a stylized, archaic manner characteristic of medieval Sumatran coinage. The beast raises one foreleg, the paw grasping an upright sword, while the tail curves dramatically over the back. The mane is depicted in a series of bold, relief pellets or scrolling locks above the head. A continuous dotted border encircles the design. The overall relief is bold but somewhat crude, consistent with the hammered flan technique employed.
