Obverse description Printed in black on a polychrome underprint using intaglio (calcography) and lithography techniques. The central vignette presents a bust of a female allegorical figure representing the Republic and Liberty, executed after Paul Thumann's design, flanked symmetrically on both sides by the denomination numeral 1000 in large guilloché-framed panels. Border inscriptions state the issuer, place of payment, governing law, and denomination in full.

Reverse description Printed in violet using intaglio (calcography). The central vignette reproduces Victor Meirelles de Lima's celebrated 1860 painting Primeira Missa no Brasil (First Mass in Brazil), rendered in fine line engraving and occupying the full width of the note. Issuer and printer inscriptions appear in the upper and lower margins respectively.
