Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of El Salvador at centre-left, depicting five volcanic peaks within a triangle flanked by two national flags and framed by a laurel wreath tied at the base. To the right of the arms appears a bust portrait of José Simeón Cañas y Villacorta, the Salvadoran priest and abolitionist, with his name inscribed in the field beside the effigy. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE EL SALVADOR AMERICA CENTRAL runs along the upper periphery, with the date 1971 and a small star positioned in the lower exergue. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
