| Obverse description | The obverse displays the Costa Rican national coat of arms at centre, featuring three volcanoes rising above a valley with the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea on either side, surmounted by a rising sun and flanked by laurel branches. The denomination UN COLON appears within the legend along the upper periphery, reading REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA, with the host coin date 1917 inscribed in the lower exergue flanked by a star on each side. The entire design is encircled by a fine toothed border. The counterstamp applied in 1923 is visible over the original host coin field. |
