Obverse description The national coat of arms of Costa Rica occupies the central field, featuring three snow-capped volcanoes rising above a valley flanked by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, each represented by a sailing vessel. A rising sun emerges from the left horizon, and seven five-pointed stars are arranged in an arc above, symbolizing the seven provinces. The arms are enclosed within an oval cartouche and surrounded by the legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA in the upper arc and AMERICA CENTRAL in the lower arc, with the date 1935 appearing at the base.
