Additional information

Japan assumed formal control over Korean monetary policy following the 1905 Eulsa Treaty, which stripped Korea of its foreign affairs authority and installed Itō Hirobumi as Resident-General. This coin was struck under that arrangement, with Japanese advisors effectively directing the Korean treasury. The Gwang Mu era coinage represents the last issues produced under the nominal authority of Emperor Gojong before Japan annexed Korea outright in 1910 and retired the series entirely.
