The Szechuan-Shensi Soviet area — established in late 1932 along the border of those two provinces — was one of the more durable Communist base areas of the pre-Long March period, and its banking infrastructure was correspondingly makeshift. Notes issued under this authority were produced under field conditions, and cloth issues like this one were a direct response to paper shortages in a region under Nationalist blockade.
"Fantasy" in the catalog designation signals that authenticity questions persist — whether this is a period propaganda piece, a later replica, or a genuine issue remains debated among specialists. The grey cloth substrate narrows nothing down; the Soviets used whatever material was at hand.
