KM#48 spans the middle decade of the Third Republic, a period when French centimes were struck in quantities large enough to be practically disposable. The Monnaie de Paris produced these in enormous runs, and attrition rather than scarcity defines survivors in any grade worth noting.
Bronze centimes of this type are notoriously prone to uneven patination from prolonged contact with damp soil — a consequence of how many were simply lost and never recovered during their working lives.
