Haiti's 1846 coinage came during the presidency of Louis Pierrot, whose government lasted barely a year before he was deposed in a military coup. Copper small denominations of this period were produced in limited quantity and saw hard use in a cash-scarce economy still burdened by the indemnity payments France had imposed in 1825 — the 150 million franc debt extracted in exchange for diplomatic recognition, which consumed Haitian state revenues for decades.
