Andorra's first native coinage series — of which this forms the lowest denomination — launched in 2002 following decades of reliance on French francs and Spanish pesetas as parallel circulating currencies. The principality had no mint of its own; these were struck at the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre in Madrid. The grandalla, the national flower of Andorra, lends its name to the currency unit itself, an unusual case of a monetary denomination taking its name from a botanical symbol rather than a historical unit of account.
