| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Pope Pius IX in pontifical vestments, including the embroidered papal cope and zucchetto, enclosed within a raised beaded inner border. The papal effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the drapery and facial features. The circumferential Latin legend reads PIVS IX PON MAX AN XXI, denoting his title as Supreme Pontiff and the regnal year. The issue year 1866 appears in the lower portion of the field, flanked by small five-pointed stars. The entire design is framed by a dentilated outer border. |
