| Obverse description | Right-facing bare-headed bust of General José Artigas, national hero and founding father of Uruguay, rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail. The legend REPÚBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY arcs along the upper periphery, while the name ARTIGAS appears in raised lettering across the lower field, with the date 1953 beneath. A beaded border encircles the entire design. The portrait is engraved in a classical neoclassical style consistent with the work of Thomas Humphrey Paget. |
