Paraguay's 1870 coinage was struck in the immediate aftermath of the War of the Triple Alliance, one of the most catastrophic conflicts in South American history. The war, which ended that same year, had killed an estimated 60–70% of Paraguay's total population and left the country financially devastated. These copper centésimos were among the first coins issued under the postwar government, minted abroad as Paraguay had no domestic minting infrastructure — production is attributed to British facilities. Surviving examples in any grade are genuinely scarce, given how little of anything survived the war's destruction.
