Brazil's 1994 monetary reform — the Plano Real — was one of the most dramatic currency overhauls in Latin American history, replacing the cruzeiro real at a rate of 2,750 to 1. Trial pieces like this were struck by the Casa da Moeda as part of the technical evaluation process ahead of that launch, testing dies, alloy behavior, and striking pressure before full production authorization. Most never left the mint in any official capacity.
