Cuba's "Patria o Muerte" coins — the peso nacional series introduced after the Revolution — circulated alongside the convertible peso (CUC) for decades as the government maintained a dual-currency system that effectively created two parallel economies on the island. Ordinary Cubans were paid in pesos nacionales and priced out of CUC-denominated stores stocked with imported goods. This centavo was part of that devalued domestic circuit.
The dual system was officially abolished in January 2021, rendering the entire peso nacional coinage series obsolete and explaining the 2020 terminal date for this type.
