Colombia's centavo coinage of this period was shaped less by economic planning than by repeated disruptions — the country had struggled to maintain consistent small-denomination production since the chaos of the Thousand Days War, and the gap between need and supply never fully closed. The copper-nickel alloy adopted here was a practical concession to metal costs and durability, replacing earlier bronze issues that had worn badly in tropical circulation.
The Hernández and Restrepo references each catalog distinct date and mintmark varieties across the thirty-year run, several of which show meaningful rarity differences not reflected in the KM listings.
