Obverse description Central device depicts three volcanoes in profile rising from a horizontal baseline, with a radiant sun emerging from behind the central peak, its rays fanning outward into the upper field. The legend REP. DE GUATEMALA arcs along the upper periphery in bold serif capital letters, while the date 1871 is inscribed in large numerals below the baseline. The coin is struck within a toothed or beaded border running the full circumference. The design is rendered in low relief with a plain, unadorned field.

Reverse description The reverse presents the denomination UN CENTAVO in two lines of bold, deeply incised serif capital letters dominating the central field. Beneath the lettering, a small decorative floral ornament flanked by horizontal dashes serves as a separating device. The field is otherwise plain, and the design is contained within a toothed or beaded border consistent with the obverse.
