The Société Française des Charbonnages du Tonkin operated the major coal mining complex at Hòn Gai in northern Vietnam, a concession granted under French colonial administration that became one of the most productive coal operations in Southeast Asia. Token currency of this kind — issued by a private industrial concern rather than a bank — circulated as scrip among the mine's workforce, functionally trapping wages within the company's own stores and canteen system.

Pink paper distinguished the 1 centime denomination within the scrip hierarchy. These charbonnage issues are genuinely uncommon survivors; most were redeemed, worn out, or simply discarded when the operation's economic model shifted.
