| Obverse description | Seated allegorical figure of the French Republic (Marianne) occupying the central field, depicted in classical drapery with a radiate crown, holding a fasces or sceptre upright in her left hand while resting her right arm upon an anchor, symbolic of maritime commerce; sheaves of wheat appear to the left of the figure. The central motif is enclosed within a raised beaded inner circle. The legend · REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE · curves along the upper periphery between two beaded borders, with the date 1879 prominently displayed at the base below two raised dots. The engraver's signature ESSAI . A.B appears in the lower exergue of the inner circle, denoting this as a trial strike by Jean-Auguste Barre. |
