| Obverse description | Bare-headed left-facing bust of James Brooke, first White Rajah of Sarawak, rendered in high relief with finely detailed wavy hair and side whiskers. The effigy occupies the majority of the field, conveying a portrait of distinguished neoclassical style. The legend is divided on either side of the bust, reading J. BROOKE to the left and RAJAH to the right, in raised serif capital letters. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded rim encircling the entire design. |

James Brooke, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, died in June 1868, but by 1863 the question of succession was already pressing — his nephew Charles was the likely heir, and the Brooke family was quietly consolidating the coinage identity of the territory. Pattern pieces from this period were struck in London as the government tested designs and metals before committing to circulation issues. The brass composition here distinguishes it from the copper that reached commerce.
