Obverse description The obverse features the allegorical figure of the French Republic rendered in the style of Dupuis, surrounded by the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE and the denomination 1 CENT. The mintmark A, denoting the Paris Mint, appears in the exergue below the central design. A beaded border frames the entire composition.

Reverse description The reverse displays four large Chinese characters arranged symmetrically around the central round hole, reading 百 (one hundred), 之 (of), 一 (one), and 分 (cent/part), collectively conveying the denomination of one-hundredth. The colonial legend INDO-CHINE FRANÇAISE arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1898 is inscribed at the base. An inner beaded circle frames the Chinese characters, and an outer beaded border runs along the rim.
