La Capital Food Mart was one of hundreds of Chicago-area Latino grocery businesses that issued their own paper scrip during the latter half of the twentieth century, functioning as informal store credit redeemable only at the issuing location. These pieces occupied a legal grey zone — technically not currency, but used as such within their community networks. The practice was especially common among businesses serving immigrant neighborhoods on the city's southwest and northwest sides, where customer loyalty and credit extension were intertwined commercial tools.
