Ceylon's 1-cent coinage of this period was struck at the Royal Mint during years that saw the island transformed into one of the most strategically critical Allied positions in the Indian Ocean. After the Japanese attack on Colombo harbor in April 1942, further civilian coin production became a low priority, and this series was quietly discontinued — copper itself being diverted toward the war effort. The 1942 date is consequently the scarcest of the run.
