Obverse description Left-facing crowned effigy of King George V, depicted in uniform with military decorations visible at the shoulder, engraved by E.B. MacKennal with the designer's initials 'BM' discreetly placed at the truncation. The king wears the Imperial State Crown rendered in fine detail. The circumferential legend reads GEORGIVS V REX ET IND:IMP: — notably omitting the customary DEI GRA: (By the Grace of God) inscription, a controversial omission that earned this issue the popular sobriquet 'Godless' cent. The legend is set between an inner beaded border and an outer milled rim.
